How many servings does this recipe provide?
Our 2 ingredient cherry bars recipe will make about 24 bars. You can cut them larger or smaller based on your needs but that is how we will calculate them for the nutritional info in the printable recipe card at the bottom and that’s roughly how they’ll cut easiest in a 9×13 baking pan.
If you want to make them larger, again, feel free, it’s totally possible to cut them into whatever size and shape suits your needs!
Can I make this cherry dessert in advance?
You can prep these in advance for sure. I’d say even a few days ahead would be fine and no one will be able to tell the difference!
If you want to make them the day of just be sure to leave enough time for them to cool completely before you try and cut/serve them. It’s almost better to prep these a little bit in advance to avoid any issues with cutting and serving.
What are the 2 ingredients we’ll need?!
To make these amazing cherry bars which come out perfectly every time you’ll need an angel food cake mix and a can of cherry pie filling!
If you like to make your own cherry pie filling you can use that as well, we will use about 21 ounces of pie filling so you’ll need to measure it out that way after you make your homemade pie filling.
What kind of angel food cake mix should I use?
Make sure to find an angel food cake mix that is ready to go. You should only need to add water and then bake. If the cake recipe on the box calls for anything else it’s not right for this recipe.
Some angel food cake mixes want you to use a ton of eggs whites, etc. Look for one that only uses water so that you know everything else is already in the mix and ready to go!
Kitchen essentials for easy baked goods:
When you head into the kitchen to make some cherry bars or other simple baked goods you’ll want to have the best tools on hand.
I like half sheet baking pans that are quality (hello no noisy pops or sloshed cookie dough from twisting), I line my cookie sheets with silicone baking mats. These are great for all kinds of baking and not just cookies! My husband loves them for making biscuits, pizzas, and more!
Of course mixing bowls, a mixer, spatula, and some whisks should be on your list if you don’t have ones that you love. I also like to have a set of cooling racks so that my recipes can properly cool before they’re scarfed down by my family!
How to make cherry bars the easy way:
Because we are starting with a boxed cake mix there’s not a whole lot of complicated steps involved in making these tasty cherry bars either!
Check out the simple process for making cake bars that come out perfectly and are easy to whip up and devour. Everyone will love this tasty treat that only uses 2 ingredients!?! It seems impossible, but look for yourself and see the magic happen!
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Mix together pie filling and cake mix (no water) until well blended.
Spread batter into a 9 x 13-inch cake pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.
Bake for about 30 minutes or until the cake springs back when touched.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.
Let cool completely before cutting and serving.
Can I serve these while warm?
You will definitely want to let these cool completely before serving. They will stiffen up a bit during the cooling process and it makes it possible to cut and serve them in actual bar form when you let them have a chance to cool fully first!
I know it will be hard to wait while they cool because they smell incredible but do your best! You can place your baking pan on a cooling rack to elevate it a bit and let it cool from all directions at once!

Just made this and wow… I thought it was going to take over my oven! Very tall and over flowing in the cake pan, I hope it goes down as it cools.
Reheat them in the air fryer, 400 for 8-9 minutes no preheat, they will taste like cherry French toast sticks.
Sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing.
I just made this, and I really like it.. I took the liberty of adding semi-sweet chocolate chips. That was a Great thing to add..
will make this again.
Since you called these bars, when It popped out of the oven It was so tall In the cake pan. But dropped as it cooled.
Can these be frozen?
I’ve never tried to freeze them. I would worry that the texture would be off when they came out of the freezer to be used! If you try it out definitely let us know how they do and we can update the post with a little note 🙂
Can I use another type of fruit pie filling other than cherry pie filling (ie, apple, berry, etc).
You can use another type of pie filling if you like!
