Tried and True Tips and Tricks for Selling on Etsy
So you’re crafty, huh? Have you heard of Etsy? Of course you have. So, let’s chat.
Etsy is known for helping women (and men!) work from home, selling their hand-crafted items, and have the financial freedom many of us chase every day during the 9 to 5 grind. If you are thinking about quitting your day job, or have already done so, it’s time to get a plan in place to sell more on Etsy.
I’m sharing with you today my tips and tricks for selling on Etsy. It’s a great platform but there are things you need to know in order to make it work for you!
How Can People Find You?
Etsy is a large platform. Everyone and their brother and sister and nieces and cousins are selling on Etsy. There’s always room for one more but you need to make sure you have a strategy to help people find you!
The best way to build recognition is to focus on selling 1-5 products at first. Once they are doing well you can add more.
Add different variables to each item, and list items as individuals rather than listing them with a quantity of ten. The more listings you have, the more likely you are to be discovered.
SEO Optimization is another huge key in being found. Even if the term “SEO” makes your head spin, it’s worth looking into. If you have the time (don’t we all?), spend a few hours reading through moz’s beginners guide to SEO. Don’t have a few hours for such light reading? Try a crash course from the Etsy blog.
Using SEO doesn’t have to be complicated. Use all of your tags, describe your items as best you can, and watch your shop stats. You’ll see what’s working (and what’s not), and will know where to go from there.
Stand Out From the Crowd
Sending samples to magazines, bloggers, etc is a great way to get your name (and product) out there – way above and beyond what most people do.
Purchase small ads on magazines or even purchase space on the back of receipts at your local grocery store. Get creative!
Teach local classes and hand your business cards out at the end.
Take out an ad in your local newspaper (or online news posting site), telling people about your products.
Trade with other local artists in exchange for promotion.
Remember to always keep creating. It’s all about trial and error, which means even if you mess something up, you have to keep trying in order to be successful at selling on Etsy!
Go Above and Beyond When Selling on Etsy
The real key to succeeding on Etsy is customer service. Think about how you can go above and behond for each and every one of your customers.
Extras To Consider when Selling on Etsy:
- Offer a discount for repeat customers
- Give a coupon code for those that sign up for your newsletter
- Free sample with each order (makeup swatch, keychain, whatever)
- Include a hand-written thank you note in each package
Hey, Stop That!
Truth be told, it’s time to stop obsessing over social media, and being sad because you only have 52 fans on Facebook.
Here’s something you might need to hear today: Many popular Etsy shops don’t even have Facebook pages!
While social media is a great tool to expand your customer base, it isn’t always the right answer for every shop. The goal here is to make sure you’re being found – that doesn’t have to mean spending hours on social media each week.
Stop comparing yourself to other sellers. They have 1,000 sales in a year, and you only have 36. Instead of focusing on what you’re doing wrong, figure out what they’re doing right – and figure out how to use those things to make your shop successful as well.
No, I’m not saying to copy their work – or anything they do, actually. Spend a few minutes to try and figure out how their shop runs so smoothly. Use their success as inspiration for yours.
At the End of the Day…
It’s all about creativity, being unique, having an amazing product, and over-delivering every single time. Do that, and your shop will succeed!
