What is ditalini pasta?

Ditalini pasta is the pasta typically used in pasta e fagioli style recipes and soups. It is small tubes of pasta that are really great for soaking up flavors and adding texture to any dish.

Literally translated it means “small thimble” and that’s accurate since this has been described as thimble like pasta and short macaroni. It’s a sturdy pasta that looks great for pasta salad so we’re using it. If you decide you want to use a different kind of pasta, that’s okay too.

If you need to make a gluten free pasta salad you can substitute any kind of gluten free pasta that you’d like! It will come out well and taste the same no matter which shape of pasta you use.

You can prep this recipe in advance if you like. I’d wait to add the avocado until the day you are going to use the pasta salad because we all know how avocado likes to get funky when it’s in the refrigerator overnight!

Can I freeze pasta salad?

Pasta that is frozen without sauce or anything added to it is easier to reheat but honestly I prefer not to freeze pasta salad. It gets eaten so quickly in our house it doesn’t make much sense to freeze it and try to reheat it without any of the ingredients getting weird or overcooked.
