Orange Julius Cupcakes

Don’t get too freaked out by the next part…I know there is a lot going on! There’s two different sets of ingredients and instructions. You have one set for the cupcakes themselves and then one for the frosting or icing, whichever name you prefer 😉 

The great thing about these from scratch cupcakes is that they’re delicious, and easier than you might think to make. Homemade cupcakes are just so tasty and they really do beat out the boxed mix! 

Let’s dive on in and I’ll show you how easy it is! 

What do I need to make these delicious cupcakes? 

  • 1/2 C unsalted butter, room temp
  • 2 egg whites, room temp
  • 2 eggs, room temp
  • 2 C flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 C buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 C sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp orange extract
  • Orange gel food coloring

How to make Orange Julius cupcakes: 

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Set up the cupcake pan with liners.
  3. Using a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
  4. In a separate large mixing bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium to high for 30 seconds.
  5. Add sugar and vanilla extract to the butter and beat until combined.
  6. Add egg whites, and then eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  7. Alternate adding the flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beating on low speed until everything is mixed together.
  8. Divide the batter into 2 bowls. The first bowl remains white while the batter in the second bowl you will add several drops of orange gel food coloring. Add 1/2 tsp of orange extract. Stir until the orange coloring is well blended throughout the entire bowl of batter.
  9. Place cupcake batter dividers into each of the cupcake liners.
  10. Pour the white/ vanilla batter in on one side with the divider in the middle. Next pour the orange batter into the other side of the cupcake liner. Remove the cupcake divider.
  11. Continue repeating the above step until all of the cupcake tins are filled up to 2/3rds with cake batter.
  12. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
  13. Allow cupcakes to cool in the cupcake pan for 10 minutes then remove and allow to cool completely on a wire rack.

What do I need to make the frosting? 

  • 2 sticks of unsalted butter, room temp
  • 4-5 C powdered sugar
  • 4-5 TBSP of heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 tsp orange extract
  • Orange gel food coloring

How do I make the cupcake frosting? 

  1. Cream the butter and powder sugar until it looks light and creamy.
  2. If it doesn’t cream add the heavy whipping cream.
  3. Test to see if the frosting can form and hold a stiff peak by taking a large spoonful and turning the spoon upside down. If the frosting doesn’t fall it is ready. If the frosting does fall off the spoon then….
  4. Add more powder sugar 1/2 C at a time.
  5. Test to make sure that the frosting can make and hold a stiff peak.
  6. When frosting is ready, add the orange extract and several drops of orange gel food coloring.( Color should be a pastel orange color) Stir well to blend both the extract and the food coloring throughout the frosting.
  7. Scoop the frosting into a pastry bag with a large frosting tip and frost your cupcakes.

  1. I made the cupcakes and they leave a weird undesirable dryness in your mouth after wards … I did follow recipe as written so not sure what went wrong.

    1. Sorry to hear that. I’ve never had that problem. I’ll have to make a batch and see what happens. Maybe too much food color in the batter or over mixing? Thanks for letting me know.
