What is a hand pie?
I like to describe hand pies as homemade pop tarts. If you’ve never made a hand pie you might not know what else to expect.
Hand pies can be sweet or savory. Sometimes they’re filled with meat and potatoes or rice for a more lunch / dinner vibe but today we’re focusing on the sweet!
These Christmas hand pies are filled with cherry pie filling and they do come out pretty close to a pop tart for those who are looking for something with which to compare the finished product.
Kids love hand pies. They’re super simple to make and eat and I like that they’re less messy and have more ingredients that I can pronounce than the store bought version 😉
How many servings does this recipe make?
This recipe should make about 8 hand pies depending on how big your Christmas tree cookie cutter is. If you want to make them into squares, circles, or any other shape you can do that!
We are using the Christmas tree because it’s cute and festive but obviously, you can use whatever shape you want. You will need two ready to use pie crusts for this recipe. They come in twos usually when you are purchasing them from the grocery store so it usually works out well.
One crust will make the tops and the other the bottoms so you’ll want to cut an even number of shapes from your crusts in the end!
If you are worried about not getting it exactly right just lay the crusts on top of each other lightly when you do the cookie cutter bit and cut both crusts simultaneously. Then you’ll just pull them apart so you have the tops and bottoms all ready to go.
What do I need to make these easy homemade Christmas pop tarts?
For this recipe you will need exactly three of the simplest to gather ingredients. This is truly one of the easiest recipes for the holidays which is why I make them all the time and anytime the kids or family members ask!
You will need an egg, some pre-made pie crusts, and a can of cherry pie filling. That is it! Nothing else. It’s crazy how easy these are. You’ll love it once you try it out!
Also add a can of vanilla or cream cheese frosting to your shopping list if you’d like to frost the final pies before serving them. I think they can be served either way but the frosting certainly adds another layer of sweetness if you’d like to decorate the finished Christmas hand pies.
How are we cooking these hand pies?
These Christmas hand pies will be “baked” in the air fryer! It’s the best way to make sure they cook quickly but also an awesome way to get the outsides crispy and flaky without having to actually bake them!
This recipe is specially designed for the air fryer but if you need to use the regular oven I would still stick with the 375F temperature, make sure you put them on a lined baking sheet, and then keep an eye on them. They will be ready to remove when the crusts are lightly browned and flaky.
Kitchen essentials for making pie recipes:
When you head into the kitchen to make some of these great recipes you’ll want to have the best tools on hand.
I like half sheet baking pans that are quality (hello no noisy pops or sloshed cookie dough from twisting), I line my cookie sheets with silicone baking mats. These are great for all kinds of baking and not just cookies! My husband loves them for making biscuits, pizzas, and more!
Of course mixing bowls, a mixer, spatula, and some whisks should be on your list if you don’t have ones that you love. I also like to have a set of cooling racks so that my recipes can properly cool before they’re scarfed down by my family!
